Blessings of Worthy Music

A new psalm describes blessings of singing worthy music.

Let not my mouth turn to stone that my heart follows after.  Open, yea open my eyes of faith that my voice will sing praise to thee O Lord.  Let me not be afraid.  Turn to the Lord and hear his voice.

Those of tender age be strong and follow the good instruction of thy mother in the midst of ridicule.  Let thy mother give words to encourage and not tear apart thy confidence.  Let thy father be a holy example and acknowledge your straight path.

In all things turn to the Lord and hear his voice, His spirit will direct.  The truth of thy soul is found in God.  When naysayers, even those of thy family have lost their way, Turn to the Lord and hear his voice, His spirit will direct and comfort thee.  Sing praise to the Lord.

President Nelson said, “We should carefully choose what we see and hear.  Don’t allow music into your lives that will show the exit door to the holy spirit. . . Be wise! Fill your minds with worthy sights and sounds.  Cultivate your precious gift of the Holy Ghost (see fireside talk by Russell Nelson 4 May 2008).

Make sure to participate in “Carry On” the stake music festival Saturday, September 17th, 6:30-9.  See poster below.

Hymn Highlight

#299 Children of Our Heavenly Father

This tender testimony of God’s love for his children was written by Caroline ‘Lina’ Sandell-Berg set to a Swedish folk tune. The child of a Lutheran pastor, Lina wrote this song early in her life (b 1832). She went on to write 2000 hymns.

J. Irving Erickson notes in his companion to the Covenant Hymnal (1973):

“An old tradition in Fräderyd…relates that she wrote ‘Tryggare kan ingen vara’ while seated on the branch of a large ash tree that stood in the parsonage yard. From that spot on warm summer evenings she could listen to the content twitter of the birds as they hid in their nests among the green leaves, and from there she could watch the stars as they began to appear. Her impressions fortified the biblical concepts of the security of God’s children.”
