Gratitude and Service

Fall in North Georgia Mountains

How do we show our gratitude for this beautiful earth and God’s blessings? “Make a joyful noise . . . Serve the Lord with gladness. . . Come forth with singing. . . . Be thankful unto Him” (Psalm 100).

Bishop Causse´ explains that, “As disciples of Christ, we have a solemn duty to work tirelessly for peace and harmony among all nations of the earth (see “Our Earthly Stewardship”, Oct 2022). Would this not show gratitude? Service and gratitude come in many different forms including music service. Keep on serving, singing, and testifying.

Hymn Highlight

Songs, Hymns, and Come Follow Me

There are many songs and hymns related to the scriptures. The ‘Come Follow Me’ lessons include song and hymn selections at the end of every lesson. This month includes, “I Want to Live the Gospel“, “Come unto Jesus“, “We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet“, “I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go“.

Although negro spirituals are not in our current hymnal, they offer a rich history of scriptural story telling through song originating from enslaved Africans in America. Many of the songs came from the southern coastal islands with the majority coming from Saint Helena Island.

Slaves identified with Moses and the captured children of Israel with the hope of deliverance. Teaching a slave to read was against the law. Gatherings, such as religious services were discouraged or not allowed, making the songs they created and sang deeply meaningful.
