Conductors help start and stop a hymn or song. They coordinate the congregation or group and the organist or pianist which means the person on keyboard should always be able to see you. A few pointers:
- Review the hymns before you stand. Look for time signatures and fermatas.
- Acknowledge your organist before the meeting. Thank them. Offer special instructions if any.
- Look up and smile at the group before beginning.
- Dress modestly.
- Double check hymn numbers on board and program.
Please consider that there is no one “right” way to conduct. Feeling the pulse of the rhythm or meter and exuding confidence will go a long way. Progression is a gospel principle and ALL can improve. Seek to continually learn and grow as a conductor.
